Track Subscriptions Before They Renew
Make a simple renewal list, find who bills you, and confirm a cancellation without connecting your bank to another app.
Before you start
For anyone surprised by a renewal or unsure which company bills them. This lesson works with paper or a private note. You do not need to connect a bank account or purchase a tracking app.
Follow these steps
- 1
Start a private list with these columns: service, billing company, amount, monthly or annual, next renewal, and keep or cancel. A sheet of paper or a note on your own device is enough. Leave out card numbers, passwords, and account numbers.
- 2
Review receipts and statements inside the accounts you normally use. Look back far enough to include annual charges. Do not upload statements to an AI tool to do this exercise. A familiar service may appear under a different billing company, so match the charge to an actual receipt.
- 3
For Apple-billed subscriptions, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. For Google Play billing, open Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions and Subscriptions. These lists do not include every subscription bought directly from a company.
- 4
If an item is missing, check its receipt to see who collected the payment. Sign in directly with that company. A different Apple or Google account may also explain a missing item. Do not use a cancellation link from an unexpected renewal message.
- 5
Compare the next charge with how much you use the service. Record trial end dates, the renewal price, and any cancellation deadline. Put a reminder before the deadline so you have time to resolve a problem. A trial may end immediately when canceled; read the current terms first.
- 6
Cancel through the company that bills you. Read the final screen and save confirmation. Deleting an app does not necessarily cancel its subscription. Do not assume that removing a payment card ends a contract.
- 7
Check the next statement and update your list. If a charge looks wrong, contact the billing company or your payment provider through its official channel. Keep the receipts and cancellation confirmation for that conversation.
Try it yourself
Add three subscriptions or trials to your list. For each, identify the billing company and the next action date. If you have none, practice with a fictional $8 monthly service.
If you get stuck
An empty phone subscription list does not mean you have no subscriptions. Check direct-company receipts and other accounts you use. Keep annual charges separate from monthly charges when totaling costs.
